Difference between fear and respect

Fear and respect are two emotions that we experience every day. When we sense that someone/something is a potential threat to us, it is fear while respect is the admiration we have for someone/something for their good work or qualities. These are different but in some case, people mistake fear for respect.

We obey our teachers or boss at work but it is always not the case that it is due to respect for them. The fear of losing a job or getting low marks might be inducing the obedience in us. Respect always needs to be earned. Just because someone is our parent, boss or teacher, we cannot and also don’t respect them. If we do, it is as a human being, only for certain things they did. There might be a little bit of emotional fear with respect as well; the fear of losing them. However, it is never vice versa. When we fear someone, we do not respect them. Respect cannot be earned by creating fear.

Respect is a positive emotion while fear is a negative. Fear makes us do something but respect makes us want to do something. Respect is very hard to be earned and once earned, it is very easy to lose; just the opposite of fear. That’s why people often try to work their way out by creating fear rather than earning respect. Fear demoralizes us and destroys our self-confidence. We are forced to act in a certain way when we fear.

Both fear and respect is important for us. This might sound contradictory but it is true. Fear helps us take important decisions that can be life-saving. Because of fear of failing and ruining the career, we study hard during exams. Hadn’t there been fear, the society and country wouldn’t abide by the law. “A good scare is worth more to a man than good advice" (Howe, 1911).

Difference between arrogance and confidence

Arrogance and confidence are two different things yet separated by only a thin line. Confidence is simply being certain about something while arrogance means being too much proud or feeling that one is superior to others. Confidence is undoubtedly important and has a positive impact on life. We all must be confident in life but when we cross the line of confidence, we become arrogant.

“Confidence is arrogance under control” (Bond, 2012). A confident person doesn’t show off the talents or skills they have to other people. In fact, they don’t need to because they always carry a positive energy with them. They are always viewed as reliable and admired by everyone. Confidence is when we are willing to accept our flaws and try to be better every time. Confidence is what drives us past our fears and allows us to take full control of our life.

On the other hand, arrogance is when we look to build ourselves up by letting others down. Arrogant people always have a relative definition of success. Their success depends upon the failure of other people. They often underestimate the capabilities of other people and take their weaknesses as their strength. Moreover, they never accept feedback or guidelines they get because they think they are perfect. An arrogant person is keen on pointing out other’s mistakes for instance, correcting other’s grammar.

Confidence is good but we need to make sure that we do not cross the line. Arrogance is a weakness that eventually drags us down. It is undesirable and unwanted and no one likes arrogant people. We also need to be able to know when we are being arrogant because we often try to become confident but end up being arrogant.

Roles that I play each day

We all play different roles each day. The relationship that we have with different people at different places keeps on changing with time. We may be a student at the college but when we are at home, our role transform into that of a son or daughter. Even a same person may be related to us in a different manner with regard to a given place and time. My usual roles comprise a son to my parents at home, a brother to my younger sister, a student and a friend at the college.

Being the only son, I carry a huge responsibility on my shoulder. A son is expected to take care of their parents and support them at every step of their life because they have given so much to us and devoted their life for us. So, I make sure every day that I am able to fulfill their expectations. Of course, sometimes I fail to do that and in that case, I get scolded. It helps me to learn from my mistakes. However, they are also not right always. They make mistakes too and in that case, it’s again my duty to correct them.

The other role that I play simultaneously with the role of a son is the role of an elder brother. I have only one sibling i.e. my sister. I share many things with her even those which I don’t share with my parents. It’s also my duty to guide her and give her necessary suggestions. At times, I scold her and get angry as well when she does something wrong but she always has a lot of respect for me.

At the college, I respect my teachers and try to learn as much as I can from them. I try my best to live up to their expectations. When I do well at studies, they praise me immediately. They are friendly but that doesn't mean they don’t scold me when I’m wrong or not doing well. Of course they do but it gives me an opportunity to take a look at myself and see what went wrong.

The role I love the most is being a friend because it’s during that time, most of the fun part of my life lies. I have really amiable friends from my college and my school and it’s great hanging out with them. At college, we have good time learning and playing football together. My friends usually take me as the one who is very good at studies and on whom they can rely upon when they have difficulty understanding some topics. I feel good about that too because it helps me to push my limits even further. Likewise, I never hesitate to share what I know. I also make sure I do not hurt their feelings and try to be diplomatic at most times.

That sums up the major roles I play each day.

Task 2

Personality Test

My personality type is "Good-natured Realist"

I am quiet, kind and conscientious. I can be depended on to follow through. I usually put the needs of other above my own needs. Stable and practical, I value security and traditions. I have well-developed sense of space and function.  I possess rich inner world of observations about people. I am extremely perceptive of other's feelings and interested in serving others.

Careers that could fit me include:

Interior decorators, designers, nurses, administrators, managers, secretaries, child care/early childhood development, social work, counselors, paralagals, clergy, office managers, shopkeepers, bookkeepers, homemakers, gardeners, clenical supervisors, curators, family practice physicians, health service workers, librarians, medical technologists, typists.

I am a little bit of introvert than extrovert. I like socializing myself but not upto that extent. I trust my senses and make decision rather than trusting my hunches. I properly analyze how my decision affects other people and take them accordingly. I usually go according to my preplanned schedules.

Some of the renowned person with similar type of personality are:
Alfred Tenyson, poet
Barabara Bush, American first lady
Jimmy Stewart, actor
Kristi Yamaguchi, figure skater
Louisa May Alcott, novelist
Michael Caine, actor
Mother Theresa, missionary nun
Mary I, queen of England
Robert E. Lee, army officer
William Howard Taft, American president

Thus, the above result sums up my personality. As mentioned above, I think about other people as well before making any decisions. I am the type of person who likes to try everything at least once regardless of whether I get success or not.

Task 1

Below are two of the abilities I should aim to acquire during this course as a Computing student:

1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of essential facts, concepts, principles and theories relating to computing and computer applications.
As a computing student I strongly feel that one should be able to present the knowledge they possess well. Failing to do so will certainly shatter the dreams of building any strong career they have, regardless of how good they are. After all, no matter where we go, people are only going to judge us by the qualities that we are able to expose. All the knowledge and understanding that I will be gaining during my course will be of no use if I am not able to demonstrate them because IT is a technical field and all the works are done practically. Being able to convert knowledge and understanding into practice is major aspect of this field. Thus, ability of demonstrating the theoretical knowledge is a must.

2. Work as a development team member, recognizing the different roles within a team and different ways of organizing teams.
Leadership quality is certainly one of the important things one must possess in every field. While working as a group, we must be able to properly analyze what each person is good at. There’s a saying “If you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid” (Kelly, 2004). Likewise, we must be able to organize teams in a good manner and guide them but in the same process, one should not forget their own responsibility. If we can’t organize teams well, we are sure to fail ultimately. There are numerous instances of people with less educational qualifications that are more successful than the ones with more qualifications. It is because of the leadership qualities they have.
